Transport is one of the biggest expenses anyone living in Nairobi incurs.
With the current economy, it's important device a way of saving as much as you can, in order to survive, especially in Nairobi.
So how do you save money on transport? Read on to find out;
1. Plan your day
Matatu fares in Nairobi vary depending on the time of day you use them. For instance; the fares are high during morning and evening hours popularly known as rush hour, while they are slightly cheap over the daily otherwise known as off peak.
To ensure you spend less on transport, ensure you capitalise on the off peak hours.
Unless something is really urgent, wait for the off peak hours and pay less while moving across the city.
In the evening, you can also leave work slightly earlier and beat the rush hour. This way you will pay slightly less compared to those ho board from 5pm on wards.
2.Carpool
Carpooling with your friends or workmates will come in handy especially if you live and work around the same area.
Areas such as Kilimani, Riverside, State House road, where you will hardly find matatus are also ideal for such.
What you do is request a cab then share the bill with your friends who live in the same area.
For instance, let's say a cab from Riverside to Uthiru is Sh350, you divide that by your 4 friends whom you carpooled with, at the end of the day, you'll find you've only used Sh87 on a comfortable ride home.
3.Embrace walking
This sounds quite obvious, but have you ever considered walking for those short distances instead of using a matatu? It will save you quite an amount of money.
For instance, if you work at Chiromo and you stay along any other road besides Waiyaki way, walk to town then afterwards board a matatu to your home.
That way, you'll have saved 40 shillings that you could have used from Chiromo to the CBD. If you do the math, you'll have saved Sh1,200 per month and chances are, you'll be in town faster that the person who'll have boarded a matatu because of traffic.
