It was the first time Spurs had lost to Brighton in a league encounter in over five meetings in history.

The Kenyan midfielder did not however feature in the match, after being left out of the starting line-up by head coach Mauricio Pochettino. He was also not among players named on the bench.

Pochettino expressed disappointment after the latest defeat. “It was a tough game, difficult. First of all, I want to say thank-you to our fans for helping us and making the effort to stay here with us. We know how they feel - very disappointed - and we share the same feelings. All I can say is thanks for their support. Then yes, it was disappointing,” said the Argentine.

The defeat came less than a week after Spurs was mauled 2-7 by German side Bayern Munich in a Champions League Group B match at the Tottenham Stadium on Tuesday night.

Wanyama’s side is now 7th on the log with 11 points after 8 matches, a massive 13 points behind league leaders Liverpool.
