The next few months if not years will be Deputy President William Ruto's make or break moment with 2022 election in sight.
Long seen as the favourite to succeed his boss President Uhuru Kenyatta, that narrative could be changing if the most recent political happenings within Jubilee Party and the political scene in general elections are anything to go by.
The question has always been: " Will President Kenyatta support DP Ruto's State House bid in 2022?" For now, no one has the answer. Perhaps only the President knows his plans.
Today's Jubilee Party has totally changed from that of 2017. Two factions have emerged; one supporting the President and ODM leader Raila Odinga, and the other one backing the DP. The two factions have traded barbs severally. This is just a confirmation that whoever is planning to use Jubilee Party as a political vehicle to contest the presidency in 2022 has a mountain to climb.
The Kieleweke wing of the party has in the past accused the DP of undermining the President. On the other hand, the Tanga Tanga faction insists that Uhuru backs his deputy come 2022. Whatever happens next is everyone's guess.
If Jubilee wrangles persist, Dr Ruto may be forced to look for an escape route in a bid to rescue his political career.
Dr Ruto will have to explore several options if the Jubilee marriage fails to work. One such option is to quit the party for an alternative political vehicle to guarantee that he will make it to the ballot.
Being a smart political operator, it is very likely that the DP is sitting pretty waiting for the 11th hour. He could be having his own political options in-store.
