A vehicle carrying General Service Unit (GSU) officers on Saturday ran over an Improvised Explosive Device (IED) on Degoh Road in Garissa County living at least 10 of them dead.
Confirming the incident, Inspector General of Police Hillary Mutyambai, said that the police have embarked on a probe into the matter. He said that the officers, who are attached to Harehare GSU Camp, were undertaking their routine patrol along Kenya-Somalia border before the incident occurred.Preliminary reports indicate that the IED was planted on the road by Shabaab militants before Toyota Land Cruiser ran over the same. Mutyambai has said that several security units have embarked on a mission to counter the attack. The team on the ground comprises of Kenya Defence Forces, Administration Police, Rapid Response Police Unit and Kenya Police Service.“The National Police Service regrets to inform the public that NPS officers were on patrol along Damajale-Harehare Road near the Kenya-Somali border when their motor vehicle ran over an Improvised Explosive Device,” the statement reads, as quoted by Daily Nation.
The incident has caused tension in the area amid government assurance to the residents of the neighborhood.
The incident comes months after at least four persons died in June following another IED attack.
