Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) Party leader Raila Odinga is expected to preside over an event to launch a book written by Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o.
Nyong’o’s book titled 'Presidential or Parliamentary Democracy in Kenya?' will be launched on Tuesday, September 24, 2019 at the Chandaria Centre for Performing Arts, University of Nairobi.
According to a poster announcing the event, Siaya Senator James Orengo, Secretary-General of the United Nations Conference on Trade and Development (UNCTAD) Mukhisa Kitui, constitutional lawyer Yash Pal Ghai and lawyers Gitobu Imanyara and Paul Muite are among those expected to grace the event.
The book launch comes at a time when a debate for Constitutional amendments continues to dominate various forums. Thirdayway Alliance Party led by Dr Ekuru Aukot has already initiated the Punguza Mizigo Bill to push for constitutional amendments.
However, a section of leaders allied to President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila has dismissed Aukot’s referendum push, urging their supporters to wait for recommendations of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) before making a decision on whether to support its amendments or not.
Aukot’s Punguza Mizigo Bill has rattled a section of leaders in the country, more so Members of Parliament (MPs). The bill recommends the reduction of the number of MPs and senators from the current over 400 to less than 200.
