The man, who was identified as Stanley Irungu, was charged with stealing the money after he withdrew and spent it.

Irungu was questioned on why he decided to spend the cash sent to his M-Pesa account by mistake. Court documents indicate that the money had been sent by one Milicent Atieno before the suspect decided to withdraw it for his personal expenses.

Irungu reportedly withdrew the money at Umoja Estate in Nairobi.

The cash was reportedly sent to his number on June 22, this year.

The complainant reportedly sent Irungu Sh60,000 but he spent Sh39,000.

Atieno told the court that she called Safaricom asking for the reversal of the said amount after she realised the mistake she had made but the mobile service provider could only trace Sh21, 000 in Irungu's account.

She also said that she made several calls to Irungu but the phone calls went unanswered before she resorted to seeking legal redress.

Irungu was freed on a Sh20,000 cash bail after he admitted that he had withdrawn the cash.

The hearing of the case has been scheduled for October 1, 2019.
