Police in Eldoret have arrested two suspects accused of smuggling cigarettes from Uganda worth over Sh10 million.
According to Uasin Gishu County Police Commander Johnston Ipara, the suspects were arrested after his officers received a tip-off from members of the public.
“We have arrested two suspects that smuggled goods from a neighboring country Uganda bearing a trademark of a local company and a product of a local company of brand super match,” he said.
The two were arrested ferrying the product in a lorry along the Eldoret-Uganda highway.
Addressing the media at the Eldoret Central Police station on Monday, Ipara said the two will be arraigned in court after an investigation on the same is completed.
“The 150 cartons of cigarettes that were netted were concealed under the lorry which indicates that the goods were manufactured in Uganda. The business persons evaded tax worth Sh6.1 million,” he added.
He said the police are on high alert and have built a network of sources to help establish and nab persons conducting illegal business activities in the area.
