With only 36 months to the next polls, focus has been shifted to Governor John Nyagarama's succession given that his term expires in 2022.

Elected on ODM ticket, Nyagarama was viewed as an underdog in 2017 when he defended his seat, only emerging victorious by a margin of 5,000 votes.

And now, his former competitors and allies are regrouping, targeting to succeed him in 2022 despite ongoing claims and counter claims of corruption.

Runners up in last election Walter Nyambati and Mwancha Okioma, both who served as Kitutu Masaba MPs, have expressed confidence in the coming election.

"Let us work with the governor. I gave him a run for his money but that's now history. I'll be on ballot in 2022 to streamline things," said Mr Nyambati in a recent interview.

But the competition seems to be favoring Borabu MP Ben Momanyi and former Kitutu Masaba MP Timothy Bosire, who is also serving as ODM treasurer.

So vicious has been the battle, that most people across the county are aligning themselves to the two leaders. Mr Momanyi is serving second term on Wiper ticket.

"He has gone to bed with the governor that's why he rarely questions him. Such kind of people should not be elected to the county," Bosire once slammed Momanyi.

But the Wiper leader has been fighting the tag of being a 'project' of the governor, and has even been forced to at times snub the governor's functions.

Also in the race are former MPs Joseph Kiangoi, James Gesami and banker James Maganda. Senator Okong'o Mogeni is also said to be secretly lobbying for the top seat.

Three major camps have since emerged. One supports Interior Cabinet Secretary Dr Fred Matiang'i for presidency while that led by Bosire insists that the region should back Raila.

And the third team, which is yet to pronounce candidate, is allied to Deputy President William Ruto. The team works under North Mugirango MP Joash Nyamoko.
