Wajir Women Representative Fatuma Gedi has argued that the handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga was only meant to ensure there is peace and stability in the country.

In an interview with Citizen TV on Tuesday, Gedi said that those bringing issues of 2022 politics into the handshake are in for a rude shock.

She affirmed that the two leaders are committed to uniting the country before Uhuru completes his second term in office. Gedi asked the critics of the handshake to change their tune for the sake of economic empowerment and unity.

“Handshake is not a party; what handshake is bringing is political stability that allows investment in Kenya. On the issue of floods, as a country, we need to bring policies and mobilise resources even before disasters,” she said.

She also urged the county governments to consider public interest projects before any other, adding that it is not right for those calling for a referendum to interfere with development.

The county MP further hit out at leaders who she argued have developed the habit of disrespecting President Uhuru Kenyatta.

“We have county governments that do not prioritise or uplift issues that will empower the people and that calls for a referendum. It is also wrong to have leaders that disrespect the president, loot funds and misappropriate funds in counties,” she added.
