The Ministry of Education has reacted to claims that students were exposed to a dangerous chemical during a Chemistry practicals exams.
Speaking to members of the press, the Education principal secretary Belio Kipsang' rubbished the claims, saying that the chemicals that were used are those that students had been using in Chemistry classes.
He said that he had been to quite a number of schools during the Chemistry practicals and had not seen a case of a student suffering from exposure to a dangerous chemical.
"We had not had any formal complaint. I can say that one and last week on Friday, we visited, personally I visited quite a number of centres when they were doing examinations and we were inside, we went through some of the schools and Chemistry teachers, I wish you would have gotten one, will tell you that these are the same chemicals that they have been using in their normal teaching processes, " the Education principal secretary said during an interview with Citizen TV Kenya.
There had been sensational claims bandied around on social media that a number of students were affected by the chemical Xylene during a Chemistry practical paper.
Students doing Chemistry, as part of their studies, mix chemicals that are carefully chosen to ensure that they don't harm the students.
The experiments are done in controlled environments.
