Kenyan Valary Aiyabei clocked a record 2:19:10 during 38th edition of Mainova Frankfurt Marathon on Sunday.
Her time ensured she smashed the 2:20 barrier and set a course record in Germany’s oldest city marathon after dethroning Meskerem Assefa's 2:20:36 time.
Unfortunately, Assefa finished third behind her Ethiopian counterpart Megertu Kebede. They clocked 2:22:11 and 2:21:10 respectively.
Aiyabei trains in Iten, Elgeyo Marakwet County alongside her husband Kenneth Kiplagat who was among her pacemakers.
"She has done us proud and this is because we had prepared well because of the competitive field. Our target was for her to run sub-2:20 and we are happy she managed to do it," Kiplagat told Nation Sport on phone from Germany.
Aiyabei stated that her target was not on breaking the world record but bettering her 2:20:53 personal best.
"My aim was to break my personal best. Running alone isn’t easy. I had to struggle and grind it out," she said.
