Former Chief Justice Willy Mutunga is pushing for the recalculation of pension.
Mutunga wants retirees’ pension backdated to July 17, 2016. ODM party leader Raila Odinga and Mutunga are among those who are likely to earn billions if the push sails through.
The two, among other civil servants, will also reap big from the new development just like other senior citizens. Mutunga, who retired in 2016, pocketed a colossal amount of money in 2017 after he was rewarded under the Pensions Act 189.
The ex-CJ was, however, does not get paid monthly pension because he had worked for less than ten years before he retired.
Upon the amendment of the Deputy President and Designated State Officers Act, 2015, Mutunga reaped other benefits after he asked for another claim on June 28, 2017.
The retirement benefits act states that “a retired Chief Justice shall, during his or her lifetime, be entitled to a monthly pension equal to eighty per cent of the monthly salary of the entitled person’s last monthly salary while in office.”
Mutunga is also expected to receive a lump sum for the salary of one year which is calculated per year of the time he served in the office.
