Writing on Twitter on Thursday, the former Mukurwe-ini MP appealed to President Uhuru Kenyatta to intervene on the matter.

'Dear President Uhuru KENYATTA: kindly VETO directive by Education minister allowing High Schools to increase fees w.e.f 1/1/2020. It's most unfair. Sir, the 2015 'task force' recommendations are still valid. Any fees increase will disinherit students of struggling backgrounds, " Kabando wrote.

The directive was issued by the Education Cabinet Secreatry Prof George Magoha who contended that the extra funds would go a long way in supporting infrastractural development in schools.

Magoha, however, said that parents should not be forced to pay if they do not want to.

The directive was based on the assessment that the Ministry of Education would not be in a position to fund the infrastracture development in schools as the 100 percent transition policy meant that available resources are strained.

When it campaigned for re-election, the governing Jubilee Party campaigned on a platform of subsidising the cost of education and making it more affordable.

The directive is likely not to go down well with a section of Kenyans who are concerned at the economic hardship the country is in.
