With only four years to 2022 presidential elections, both Deputy President William Ruto and ODM leader Raila Odinga are keen to control over 1 million votes at state on Kisii and Nyamira Counties.
Already, both leaders have made over seven trips between them to the larger Gusii region, with their focus being controlling the populous region.
While Raila has traditionally enjoyed support in the region, Ruto's camp is keen to pouch youthful leaders to join experienced politicians in his camp.
Already, Ruto has managed to keep Antony Kibagendi, a former ODM youth leader who joined Jubilee after botched Kitutu Chache South primaries.
Mr. Kibagendi is now working as youth Secretary in Ruto's office and has been instrumental in organising meetings in the larger Gusii region for Ruto.
And for Raila, he is banking on Simba Arati, the Dagoretti North MP with a huge following back in Kisii where he's supposed to contest for gubernatorial seat.
Early this year, Arati positioned himself as Gusii spokesman thus giving him an added advantage in the political arena.
Also in Raila's team is Nyamira County Assembly Majority Leader Duke Masira, a firebrand politician who doubles as the Township ward MCA.
On the center of controversy is Don Bosco Gichana, a millionaire businessman who joined politics in 2007.
Few days after his release from Tanzania prison after pleading guilty of money laundering and fraud, Bosco admitted that both Raila and Ruto helped him raise Sh15 million fine.
And to wrap on the top five influencial politicians is nominated MCA George Mosiori, the majority whip in Nyamira county assembly.
The DP's campaign team has been relying on him in strategy and oratory in public rallies for over a year now.
