Kisii Senator Sam Ongeri now wants three more constituencies to be created in the county following the release of the 2019 census report.
While reacting to the report which was released on Monday, November 4, 2019, Ongeri argued that with Kisii County being the most populous county in the Nyanza region, the county should have more constituencies.
"It is time for Kisii County to have three more constituencies on top of the current nine constituencies that we have. The population in Kisii will keep on growing and therefore, our people should get better services," said Ongeri as reported by Egesa FM.
The vocal politician argued that a population of 1,266,860 people is a true reflection that there is growth in Kisii County but wondered why Nyamira County recorded a small number of people.
"I call upon leaders from Kisii to focus on serving our people. As leaders, we should now start pushing IEBC to create three more constituencies in Kisii ahead of 2022 general elections," he added.
The current constituencies in Kisii county are; Bobasi, Bonchari, Bomachoge Chache, Bomachoge Borabu, Kitutu Chache North, Kitutu Chache South, Nyaribari Chache, Nyaribari Masaba, and South Mugirango.
South Mugirango MP Sylvanus Osoro has disputed the census report claiming that Kisii and Nyamira counties have more people than indicated in the report.
"Kisii has turned to be a rural slum thanks to our numbers. We are not less than 2.5 million in Kisii and Nyamira is not less than 1.2 million. Somebody could be working hard to deny us our well-deserved resources in favour of some region. We refuse," he said.
