Over 50 leaders from Mt Kenya region on Saturday converged at a hotel in Embu Town to discuss the contents of the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) report following its launch by President Uhuru Kenyatta on Wednesday.
The meeting was led by Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjuri, Kirinyaga Woman Representative Purity Ngirici and Kiharu MP Ndindi Nyoro among others.
Other leaders attended the meeting, according to the Star, are Embu Senator Njeru Ndwiga and Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria.
Senator Ndwiga said that the leaders from the region are ready to examine the contents of the report into detail before they determine whether to back it or not.
He also expressed optimism that the leaders will reach a consensus once they have left the meeting.
"We shall look into the report and after some hours we promise that there will be white smoke,” said Ndiwga, as quoted by The Star.
The meeting comes at a time when ODM leader Raila Odinga wants a referendum held in order to determine whether to implement the recommendation of the report.
Raila has been opposed to the report being subjected to a parliamentary process arguing that Deputy President William Ruto is likely to hijack the whole process at the end of the day.
On his part, Ruto has said that he is ready for a referendum if that is the only way to ensure Kenyans get what they deserve from the leadership of this nation.
