President Uhuru Kenyatta and ODM boss Raila Odinga are banking on governors to make the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) a success, it has emerged.
The duo is said to have embarked on a charm offensive to have the county bosses lead the way in rallying their regions behind the BBI report.
The Nation has established that Raila has since discussed the matter with four governors over the past three days, on the sidelines of Kibra campaigns, ahead of the report release.
On Saturday, he lobbied for the report when he met governors Charity Ngilu (Kitui), Alfred Mutua (Machakos) and Kivutha Kibwana (Makueni) and Anne Waiguru (Kirinyaga) on Sunday.
The paper also reports that he has approached the Council of Governors, which is led by his close ally and Kakamega Governor Wycliffe Oparanya, with the same request.
In Jubilee, insiders told the paper that the two are concerned by the opposition the report is already facing, and have reached out to the governors to use them as its envoys.
“Through their emissaries, they have reached out to governors as they seek support for the BBI initiative," the source told the paper.
Two weeks ago, lawmakers from Uhuru's Mt Kenya backyard threatened to crush the report should it propose law changes to bring about a parliamentary system.
In Jubilee Party, there exist two types of members; for and against the BBI, with those opposed to the BBI terming it a plot to expand the executive to accommodate poll losers.
