The National athletics trials are taking place on today (Thursday) at Nyayo National Stadium.
The trials will determine athletes to represent the country during the international competitions slated for September 27 to October 6 in Doha, Qatar.
The semi-finals in 800m in both men and women will take place today, while the finals are slated for Friday.
A number of top runners will be featured in the much-awaited trials. Some of them include Emmanuel Korir, Michael Saruni (800m), Ferguson Rotich (the 2016 Diamond league winner), Wycliffe Kinyamal (reigning Commonwealth games champion) and Alfred Kipketer.
Korir who is considered the next Rudisha affirmed that he will do his best to regain his fitness after struggling with injuries.
“I didn’t have the best Diamond League season, I have been dogged with injuries that’s why I didn’t give my best in Zurich,” he said Korir as quoted by the Standard.
“But I’m glad to be back home, I have been training session in Iten, so I’m looking forward to the trials which I’m sure will be pretty competitive,” he added.
In the women’s category, top runners such include Eunice sum (former world champion), Jackeline Wambui (National champion), and Janeth Jepkosgei (former world champion) among others.
So far, only Beatrice Chepkoech, the world’s steeplechase champion has secured her slot in the international championships.
