For over three years now, investigations to the death of slain businessman Jacob Juma seems to have hit a snug, despite sophisticated instruments in possession with Kenya's CID.

Mr Juma, a fierce critic of Jubilee administration, was killed within Nairobi, Kenya's most protected city given the presence of CCTV cameras and security officers.

Until now, the government has remained mum over the death that was closely linked to contemporary politics and alleged grand theft in government.

Hours before his death, investigations showed, Mr Juma, called opposition leader Raila Odinga and a foreign envoy. The renowned businessman asked for an urgent meeting with them over alleged eurobond theft.

During the memorial service in 2016, Mr Odinga revealed that he had received a call from Juma but was unable to meet him since he was held up.

"The last time I spoke to him was on that fateful day. He called me at around midday and said that he had some important matters to discuss with me and therefore he was inviting me for a lunch date.

"I told him I had some matters in parliament and we agreed we meet in the evening. That's the last time we spoke. This is a police hit squad that is known. It has been used in all those other murders. Jacob knew it was going to happen. All of us knew about it," he narrated.

While Mr Odinga maintained that Juma was killed by the hit squad from the police, police spokesman Charles Owino insisted that whoever who participated in the murder would be charged.

"If at all a policeman participated in the murder, he will be arraigned in court. Let's allow investigations to be concluded," he had said in an interview.

The then CID boss Ndegwa Muhoro, now an envoy, could not explain circumstances under which CCTV footage that may have tracked Juma's last movements disappeared.

With Juma having mentioned Deputy President William Ruto in alleged assassination plot, Muhoro also refused to acknowledge whether or not the DP was summoned.

"For now I can assure you that investigations are ongoing. I don't want to respond to that. Let us give police time to investigate," he told journalist Mohamed Ali, now Nyali MP and a confidant of Ruto.

Curiously, Juma's vehicle was towed from murder scene without forensic investigations. It's also unclear why police took six hours before booking the body at City mortuary.

And even with the reconciliation of President Uhuru Kenyatta and Raila Odinga, the investigations to Juma's death remains only wishful thinking.

This is contrary to other murder cases, like the recent death of billionaire Tob Cohen, who was found dead in his home. A number of suspected killers have been arrested.
