As Nairobi City County stares at a looming administrative crisis, questions have emerged as to why Governor Mike Mbuvi Sonko has failed to appoint his deputy, nearly two years since the resignation of Polycarp Igathe in 2018.
Should the High Court on Wednesday give the embattled Governor harsh bail terms by barring him from running the county, then Nairobi could face leadership crisis as there is no Deputy Governor to take over in such a situation.
According to Embakasi MCA Michael Ogada, Sonko resisted several calls for him to appoint his deputy for fear of the unknown.
" We urged the Governor to appoint a deputy maybe because he feared for the unknown. He thought that maybe if he had a deputy Governor then he would be 'pushed' a bit faster but he failed to understand that pushing is pushing whether it comes early or late," said the county lawmaker.
Sonko was arrested on Friday in a dramatic arrest in Voi, just hours after the Director of Public Prosecutions Noordin Haji issued a warrant of arrest against him.
He was arraigned in Court on Monday where he was charged with 19 accounts of misuse of public office, alongside several others.
