Nairobi Governor Mike Sonko is on the spotlight after Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) on Friday highlighted suspected cases of bribery involving millions of money.
Sonko has been accused by the EACC of receiving bribes totalling to Sh39 million from four companies.
The commission’s forensic investigator Simon Cherpka alleged that three companies paid a total of Sh27.4 million into Sonko's Equity Bank accounts. The transactions are alleged to have been done after Governor Sonko awarded the companies multi-million contracts.
The contracts were allegedly awarded to the companies without following the required procedure.
“Between June 2017 and February 2019, investigations have revealed massive fraud, procurement irregularities, misappropriation of public funds and conflict of interest through inconsistent and exaggerated payments made to individuals and proxy companies at City Hall,” Cherpka said.
The anti-graft agency filed documents in court detailing the alleged bribery.
The move by EACC came just a day after Sonko who had sought the intervention of the court failed to stop the EACC from investigating him.
“Having listened to the applicant and opposing submissions, I do not find it appropriate to grant the interim orders he is seeking at this juncture. I will allow all parties to file their responses and submissions before the hearing on Thursday next week,” Justice John Onyiego ruled.
An investigation into the corruption allegations against Sonko has been transferred to the anti-corruption division of the High Court.
