COTU Secretary General Francis Atwoli has been cautioned against thinking he can force amendments on Kenyans, to realize his prophecy about President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Atwoli has since May 2018 been saying that the constitution must undergo amendments to retain Uhuru in power after his 2022 retirement, terming him too young to retire.

He is also among the prominent figures pushing for changes through the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI), where he has proposed the formation of an Executive Prime Ministerial seat.

But High Court advocate Ambrose Weda has told him off, accusing him of forcing changes on Kenyans and reminding him that he is no longer dealing with his COTU members who he has been ruling without being questioned.

He told Atwoli that he has crossed the border and is now dealing with Kenyans, who will not allow the proposed changes to be shoved down their throats as Atwoli might wish.

"Atwoli might think Kenya is COTU, Kenya is not COTU, Kenya has people who will not allow constitutional changes made without their consent," he said in an interview on KBC English Service's The Big Conversation on Wednesday.

He also doubted if changes are what Kenya really need now, observing that the country has many more serious issues which deserve the massive attention being given to the BBI.

According to the political analyst and Lake Basin Development Authority (LBDA) board member, it will also be unreasonable to hold a referendum only months to the 2022 general polls.

"We have so many challenges already. About using millions to hold a referendum a year to the general elections, I think the president is smarter than that," he added.

Atwoli is among the organizers of the Western Kenya BBI meeting set for Kakamega county on January 18.
