An expectant woman arraigned before a Mombasa Court to answer to terror-related charges told the court that she fears she might have lost her child.
While appearing in court on Monday, Said Hussein Chirumu accused police of mishandling her during her arrest, adding that she's not felt her baby's kicks since then.
Chirumu told the court that the officers allegedly assaulted her and used excessive force during her arrest following a raid in Likoni on October 1, 2019.
Three Al-Shabaab suspects were killed during the operation that was carried by the Anti-Terror Police Unit (ATPU) and Recce Squad.
Chirumu asked Mombasa Chief Magistrate Edna Nyaloti to allow her to undergo a medical check-up to ascertain her unborn baby's health.
She further pleaded with the court to release her, arguing that she is required to make frequent visits to a clinic.
“I was assaulted and handled with excessive force and I am now unable to feel the kicks from my unborn child, an issue which is of great concern and requires urgent medical attention,” said Chirumu as quoted by the Daily Nation.
The accused who is among seven other suspects who were arrested in Likoni has denied the terror charges levelled against her.
State Counsel Erick Masila had filed an application to have the eight detained in police custody for 30 days to allow the police to complete their investigations.
“The intelligence report received showed the suspects were planning a major attack within Mombasa central business district and were found in possession of assorted weapons of mass destruction,” Masila said.
