According to the mother of the baby, Stacy Wanjiru, shortly after giving birth on December 20, 2019, she noticed her baby boy had breathing problems. She informed the health officials at the hospital who advised her to breastfeed her child.

"I noticed the child was not breathing well, I informed them that the child had a breathing problem and they told me to breastfeed him. When I breastfed him he refused and begun screaming. (Nikaskia mtoto hapumui vizuri, nikamwambia huyu mtoto hapumui vizuri.  Akaniambia nimnyonyoshe halafu utulie. Kwenda kumnyonyesha mtoto anapiga nduru hataki kunyonya)," she told NTV.

Wanjiru claims that she kept complaining about her child's condition to the doctors for a whole day but they did not attend to him.

"I spent the whole day complaining that my child was not well but no one attended to me. I did not know what to do. Finally, they gave the child glucose twice. (Sasa the whole day nilishinda nikiambia madktari huyu mtoto hayuko sawa, huyu mtoto hayuko sawa. Hawanishughulikii. Sasa mimi nikashindwa nitafanya nini. Wakampatia glucose, hiyo glucose I think alimpea mara mbili)," she narrated.

The following day the child was referred to Pumwani hospital in critical condition.

"He was taken to the nursery and was plugged to oxygen. After he was plugged to the oxygen, the doctor called me and told me those other doctors have messed up my child. If they had referred him early enough, he would not have died. (Akapelekwa nursery alafu akawekwa kwa oxygen. Vile aliekwa kwa oxygen, daktari akaniita akaniambia hao watu wamemess mtoto wangu. Kama wangempeleka mapema, hio kitu haingefanyika)," Wanjiru explained

The child died on December 21, while being attended to at Pumwani hospital.

The mother has accused Bahati Health Center of negligence citing that her late son only had a minor issue which would have been solved had he been attended to on time.

When contacted for a response, the nurse in charge said that those involved will be available on Friday.

Wanjiru is now seeking justice and wants the doctors who attended to her child after birth to be held accountable.
