Huruma MCA Peter Chomba now wants Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to investigate Uasin Gishu County officials over alleged bribery at the Eldoret wholesale market.
He claimed that the officials from the Department of Trade and Environment have been harassing traders at the market.
He said the most affected are businesses with over 100 persons selling bananas at the market.
“I have received information from those selling bananas at the wholesale market that there are some county askaris who visit them weekly to take a bribe of Sh500 yet they have paid all the county fees failure to which they will not be allowed to continue with their business,” said the Huruma MCA.
Chomba who spoke to the press at the Eldoret wholesale market on Wednesday said that due to fear of being chased away from the market, they have been parting with the Sh500 bribe.
“I want to urge the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to do an investigation and arrest those officers involved in corruption in the Eldoret wholesale market since 95 per cent of them are poor,” added the Jubilee Party MCA.
He, however, said that he will not allow that to continue happening and called on the business persons not to pay the bribe anymore.
He said the market should be closed should the askaris remain adamant questioning why they are asking for money from the traders.
