A fifteen-year-old girl that was expected to join the secondary school is missing from her home and the school which she ought to have joined last week.
The girl is from Kebirigo village in Nyamira South Sub County.
According to Nyamira County Director of Education (CDE) Margaret Mwirigi, the mother reported the missing child to the area chief after she realised that the girl was neither in Raimandere Secondary school where she was set to join nor at relatives' homes.
Mwirigi urged the public to report to relevant authorities if they came across the girl or if anyone had the information to her whereabouts.
"We believe the girl is safe. We suspect a case of early marriage but we shall rule out once we get her," noted the county director of education.
"Anybody coming across that teenage should ensure that she is taken back to school or reported to the chief so that she can be safe and in school," she added.
In case of early marriage, Mwirigi said, because the girl is 15 years, the culprit will be dealt with according to the law.
The County director also warned principals who were forcing below-average students to repeat classes so as to push the KSCE mean scores upwards.
She noted that the act was education malpractice and that if it (repeating) is necessary, it should be voluntarily.
"Once you force one to repeat, we traumatize them and the end results are not appealing," she noted while addressing Nyamira County principals in Kebirigo Boys High school on Tuesday where they met to celebrate good KCSE results of 2019 and discuss ways of supporting government programs among them, 100 per cent transition from primary school to secondary.
In the meeting, it was agreed that there was a need to track all the students to ensure they are in school.
