Her mutilated body was discovered in the morning by shocked residents.

The 9 pm incident was confirmed by Yatta sub-county deputy police commander, George Kashimiri.

Kashimiri told the press that the woman had gone to fetch water at River Athi before she was attacked.

Katangi Member of County Assembly Nicholas Muia faulted the Kenya Wildlife Service over the incident.

He noted that residents have been decrying hippo menace for the longest time and no action has been taken.

Muia said that if no action will be taken, he will lead residents in chasing away the hippos from the area.

"If the KWS doesn't act, I will call for mass action against these beasts, we won't wait and watch as our crops are destroyed and people get killed," he said.

The MCA further said that residents have been forced to stop farming because the crops were being destroyed by the hippos.

He said the affected villages include Kalitya, Malatani, Ndiuni, Kaliani among others.

The body was moved to Matuu Mediance mortuary for preservation as investigations into the incident began.
