This is after Kenyans protested on social media against the decision to prohibit passengers from bringing food and drinks on the trains which operate between Nairobi and Mombasa.

In the earlier announcement that had been made, Kenya Railways had warned that it would confiscate the said items at the checkpoints at the termini and stations.

“Following customer feedback on the notice prohibiting entry of beverages and foodstuff into the standard gauge railway (SGR) termini and stations, Kenya Railways wishes to reassure our customers that we have instituted negotiations with our service providers,” Kenya Railways said in a statement quoted by Standard Digital.

The company further noted that the suspension of the ban was temporary as negotiations on the matter were still going on.

During this period of negotiation, passengers have have been allowed to bring food and drinks from outside.

Alcoholic drinks nonetheless still remain prohibited on the trains.

Kenyan netizens who criticized the move to ban foodstuffs and beverages pointed out the decision was not only impromptu but also one which was not well thought of.

The ban would have seen passengers buy food and beverages inside the coaches by NAS Airport Services.
