A body of a 60-year-old man was on Wednesday afternoon retrieved from Kwa Muvolo dam in Kyamutwii village in Mwala sub-county of Machakos county.
Residents milled around the dam as divers spent more than six hours searching for the body of the man who drowned in the dam.
The man identified as Muthini King'oo was reported to have gone missing from his home on Tuesday evening after leaving for the market.
The incident was confirmed by Makutano location chief Simon Nzyoki Kiminza who told Hivisasa that there was a need for the dam to be fenced in a bid to avert accidents.
He said that the water levels in the dam are very high due to heavy rains thus posing risk to the residents and more so children.
"We engaged local divers and retrieved the body, the man drowned on Tuesday evening after leaving home. The dam is full of water and needs fencing to avert such accidents," said Nzyoki.
The chief, however, warned residents not to send their children to the dam or any swollen water source.
Police took the body to Machakos Level Five Hospital mortuary for preservation awaiting burial arrangements.
