The Machakos County boss has declared intentions to run for the presidency, his first-ever attempt since joining politics.

Mutua served as government spokesman during Mwai Kibaki's regime before winning the gubernatorial seat in 2013.

In a series of tweets on Tuesday, Mutua said he will launch his campaigns, adding that presidency is not a preserve for certain elements.

"I will officially launch my CAMPAIGN to be the next PRESIDENT of Kenya in 2022. I will show Kenyans that it is possible for a child to be born in the villages, to dream, work hard with a pure heart and achieve his or her dream," he said.

Dr Mutua, who is also the leader of Maendeleo Chap Chap party, said 2020 will be the year of change in the country.

"The year 2020 will be a TURNING POINT and a year of FORCED change for our country. Systems to make us progress will have to be set up. Kenya does not belong to one or two individuals or families. It belongs to all of us," he said.

The youthful governor is pushing to dethrone former Vice President Kalonzo Musyoka as the kingpin of the Akamba community.
