Kirinyaga governor Anne Waiguru's wedding in Kiamugumo village earlier in the month was a big affair, but at the same a litmus test to the Mt Kenya political arena.

The issue came out more as a political demonstration ahead of the 2022 general elections, says political strategist Benjamin Wafula in an article on the Standard on Saturday.

According to Wafula, the absence of other area leaders said to be jostling for the Mt Kenya kingpin slot was most unlikely a coincidence, and might be proof of a growing rivalry.

The likes of Gatundu South MP Moses Kuria, area Muranga governor Mwangi Wairia, Ferdinand Waititu (Kiambu) and Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjuri were all absent.

He says that if not a coincidence, this speaks volumes about the rivalry among area leaders eyeing the spokesman position ahead of President Uhuru Kenyatta's retirement.

He says that a political statement was also made courtesy of Deputy President William Ruto's absence, with the DP and his allies instead heading to Tharaka Nithi county.

According to Wafula, the fact that the two have been close allies lately made it very unlikely for Euro to skip the function, with his absence being proof that the friendship has been eroded.

"The conspicuous absence of Deputy President William Ruto, whether strategic or inevitable, and the notable presence of ODM leader Raila Odinga caught many by surprise. In my preceding assumption, the contrary was bound to happen," he says.

Waiguru's wedding to lawyer Kamotho Waiganjo was attended by Ruto's leading rival and former Prime Minister Raila Odinga and his opposition deputy Kalonzo Musyoka.

The function was presided over by President Uhuru Kenyatta, and attended by a host of other leaders from across the nation.
