The United Nations, which is organising the summit, issued a confirmation on Friday that Chile had asked to be excused from hosting the summit due to ongoing protests in the country.

She had travelled halfway to Santiago when the news that Chile would not be hosting the event was announced.

Greta Thunberg will now have to turn back if she is to make it to the United Nations summit.

"As #COP25 has officially been moved from Santiago to Madrid I’ll need some help. It turns out I’ve travelled half around the world, the wrong way:) Now I need to find a way to cross the Atlantic in November... If anyone could help me find transport I would be so grateful," the environmental activist said in a tweet.

Greta does not travel on planes because she does not want her travels to contribute to carbon emissions.

Early this week, the globally renowned climate activists refused a $50,000 environmental award given by the Nordic Council in honour of her environmental activism.

She apologised to the people of Chile for not being able to make it to the country.
