Police have identified Soweto area in Kayole as the main source of illicit liquor being sold and consumed across the city.
The police have also established that the trade is controlled by a group of powerful and wealthy cartels who use their money and connection to keep their operations running.
Embakasi Central Deputy County Commander Kenneth Moronge told the Star on Monday that the estate supplies the entire city with the banned drink.
The police boss said that despite owning a distillery and distribution chain, the cartels have also blocked attempts to stop the trade by corrupting the police system.
“We have had very powerful illicit brew dealers operating in the area for ages. They have made fortunes out of the trade which they use to corrupt the system,” he said in his office.
He added that among the cartels is one Daudi, who has also incorporated area youth in his team, their job being to scare away authorities when they try to raid his distilleries.
The police boss added that Daudi has also been intimidating and threatening people attempting to interfere in his businesses, adding that he is personally a victim.
“I am also targeted with the threats and intimidation because I destroyed their headquarters and left that place bare," he added, after raiding one of Daudi's distilleries on Sunday.
He said that while the cartels continue to amass wealth, the consumers continue to lie in the gutters.
