Nyamira County lost over Sh300 million in four years following irregular employment of staff by rogue county officers, a report has revealed.
Governor John Nyagarama unveiled a payroll roll audit team which has since exposed inadequacies in the county's public service.
Already, over 1000 workers were sent home and three payroll officers, who are accused of plotting the scheme that saw millions spent on irregular work force.
Although the report is yet to be adopted by the cabinet, heads have started rolling, with Nyagarama cutting links with five of his aides accused of the fraud.
"The county lost over Sh300 million through irregular employment and promotions in four years. People were being recruited without proper procedure," said one of the officers.
He added:"We established many people being promoted without due process, further consuming millions through recurrent expenditure."
Nyagarama reportedly failed to renew the contracts of his long time aides Kefa Mocheche, Job Ong'ombe, Joash Gisore and Joseph Amwoma.
In a statement last week, Governor Nyagarama said those who were irregularly promoted will be compelled to repay millions of money they were paid.
"We have the report and those mentioned shall pay the irregularly allocated money from improper promotions. We are not going to relax and let them walk free," he said.
The 1000 officers who were expunged from the payroll have already moved to court in Kisumu, arguing that proper procedure wasn't followed.
