Speaking during a live-streamed event in San Francisco on Tuesday night, Mr Musk said that testing of the brain-reading "threads" has already been done on animals.

"A monkey has been able to control the computer with his brain," he said.

The main goal of this experiment is to one day treat brain disorders using the implanted chip.

"All animal procedures were performed in accordance with the National Research Council’s Guide for the Care and Use of Laboratory Animals and were approved by the Neuralink Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee," noted Mr Musk.

The procedure of the chip implantation into the brain will require drilling a hole through the human skull. The surgeons will then embed the tiny insulated "threads" (which smaller than the human hair).

Mr Musk hope is to find a way through which human beings can be merged with artificial intelligence. He noted that the only way he can achieve this is through the use of wireless tiny chips implanted in the brain.

"This is going to sound pretty weird, but ultimately, we will achieve symbiosis with artificial intelligence. This is not a mandatory thing. This is a thing you can choose to have if you want. This is something that I think will be really important on a civilization-level scale," he noted.

He further says that his team is will require a lot of time to meet this goal. More so, getting federal approval for this project will be difficult.
