Two people have died and several others injured after being involved in a grisly road accident in Kirinyaga county.
The accident involving a police vehicle and a motorbike happened along the Kianyaga-Rwambiti Road on Sunday night.
According to witnesses, the two motorbike passengers died, while the driver escaped with a leg fracture, after the driver of the police vehicle lost control and hit them.
Six officers who were on patrol in the police vehicle were also injured after being thrown off the vehicle and landing on rocks.
They said that after hitting the motorbike, the Land Cruiser vehicle veered off road and rammed into a tree.
The se also saw guns belonging to the officers scattered all over the place, before they were collected and returned to the Kianyaga Police Station.
The officers, most with head and led injuries, were treated and discharged at the Kerugoya Hospital, while others were admitted in critical condition.
"The officers were wounded and they could hardly walk due to the injuries they sustained during the accident," said Jamleck Mbuko, a witness.
The motorbike drover was also treated at the same hospital, reports the Nation.
Angry locals later rioted and set the police vehicle ablaze, accusing its driver of driving carelessly.
Confirming the incident, Kirinyaga East OCPD Alfred Ng'eno, said that a manhunt has been launched for the hooligans who burnt the police patrol car.
"In fact, even our officers escaped death by a whisker. It was a serious accident which should not have happened if the rider observed traffic rules properly," he said.
