Kisii Senator Prof Sam Ongeri has fired warning shots to a section of politicians who are publicly opposing constitutional changes saying such leaders are enemies to the country's future.
Speaking on Friday evening during the burial of David Ombogo Michieka who was the husband to nominated MCA Mary Goima at Nyamagesa, Nyaribari Masaba constituency, Ongeri argued that the constitution should be changed ahead of the 2022 polls.
He said this will curb political violence where communities fight because one of their own has not won the elections.
"It is high time as leaders from the Gusii community to get into serious business and speak in one voice. The future of our community lies on our hands as leaders. We should be part of those pushing for constitutional changes aimed at accommodating everyone," Ongeri noted.
He called on Kisii leaders to debate and review the BBI report and ensure the recommendations in the report are well explained to Kisii residents.
"The BBI came as a result of the historic handshake between President Uhuru Kenyatta and the former Prime Minister Raila Odinga. It is important for this country to have a governance system where every community is represented well. Constitutional amendments should not cause division among Kisii leaders," added Ongeri.
