Police officers in Buruburu, Nairobi county, are investigating an incident where a man lost his life after consuming a concoction disguised as herbal medicine.

Harrison Maina, 30, is said to have bought the concoction from a hawker, alongside three of his colleagues. They later developed body pains resulting in Maina's death shortly after.

The incident was confirmed by Buruburu police boss Adamson Bungei, who suspected that the three unknowingly bought and consumed poisonous chemicals.

Bungei admitted having knowledge that such concoctions have been in circulation across the area, with the hawkers, claiming to be herbalists, targetting unsuspecting members of the public.

“These chemicals are unregulated but they are apparently popular among unsuspecting consumers,” said the police boss, who added that the death is being investigated.

The four, who work in a hotel in Buruburu area said to have sought their boss' help when they began experiencing pains who rushed them to Mama Lucy Hospital.

The deceased was announced dead on arrival, while the remaining victims were admitted and are undergoing treatment at the same facility.

Officials have warned against the concoctions being hawked in major towns by people claiming they can cure a variety of ailments, including skin diseases and fertility problems.
