Former Taita Taveta County Woman Representative Joyce Lay has resigned from a state job, a year after she was appointed by President Uhuru Kenyatta.
She was appointed by Uhuru in February, 2019, as a Trustee in the Water Sector Trust Fund (WSTF), through then Water Cabinet Secretary Simon Chelugui.
In a tweet on Thursday, Lay, who recently confessed she was struggling to repay debts she accumulated while serving as Woman Rep, revealed she quit her state job after she landed a well-paying job in the private sector.
"I rendered my resignation letter as a Trustee WSTF because God has rewarded me with a position in the private sector with a good salary. When I said that I’m broke many laughed. God has remembered me! I give Him praise!" she posted.
Even though there is no law prohibiting her from serving as a Trustee and being in the private sector, Lay said she quit to avoid conflict of interest since her new employer is in the water sector.
"I resigned from WSTF to avoid conflict of interest. The company that I’m going to work for deals with sanitation- sewage treatment and water recycling," she said.
The ex-legislator thanked the Head of State for giving her a chance to serve in his government, claiming she did not use her time in public office to enrich herself.
"I want to thank My President Uhuru Kenyatta for the opportunity he gave me to serve at WSTF as a Trustee. I served faithfully and didn’t take even a single cent that I didn’t deserve," Lay said.
