Newly-installed governor of Kiambu county James Nyoro has begun receiving suggestions on how to fill the deputy governor position even before he settles down.
The first to offer ideas on the criteria Governor Nyoro should use to get an assistant has been the Kiambu county assembly speaker Stephen Ndichu.
Mr Ndichu urged the county boss to take into account gender and regional balance.
"But your excellency, I have been sent by many people that you consider gender because it was passed in Nairobi that when the governor is male then the deputy governor should be female... But also another thing is that you should consider regional balance so that when the governor comes from Kiambu West the deputy governor should come from Kiambu East (Lakini your excellency ningekuuliza na nimetumwa na watu wengi ukonsider gender kwa sababu kumepitishwa kule Nairobi kwamba gavana akiwa mwanaume deputy awe mwanamke... Lakini ingine ni kwamba ubalance region ya kwamba gavana akitoka Kiambu west deputy anatoka Kiambu West)," the Kiambu county speaker said. (0:35-1:16)
James Nyoro took over from former governor Ferdinand Waititu, who was impeached on Wednesday by the Senate.
His installment as the substantive county head has created a vacancy in the deputy governor's position which is bound to attract scores of applications.
He is expected to be careful in who he chooses as his deputy to avoid the constant wrangles that he had with his former boss Ferdinand Waititu.
