A Mediamax journalist has accused Nakuru county askaris of harassing him when he attempted to access the county attorney's office at the county headquarters on Sunday.
Nakuru Bureau Chief Noa Kipkosgei says attempts to access Caleb Nyamwange's office in relation to a story he has been following were met with harassment from the officers.
He claims trouble began when he refused to wait outside as was demanded by the officers, after which they allegedly attacked and threw him out of the premises.
"I was told to wait for him outside, but I told them that was a public office hence they shouldn’t make it look like a military camp. They did not take kindly my protest and they descended on me like a thief,” he said as quoted by Standard.
According to Kipkosgei, he was later handcuffed before being rescued by a county communications officer, an incident that has since been confirmed by County Director of Communications Beatrice Obwocha.
"I regret the incident and apologise to you,” she said while responding to queries over the same in a journalists WhatsApp group.
The incident was condemned by Kenya Union of Journalists (KUJ) Nakuru Chair Mercy Kahenda who has demanded that Governor Lee Kinyanjui tenders an explanation over the incident.
She has also called for stern legal measures against the officers, after the journalist claimed that they also assaulted him in the process.
