Nominated Senator Isaac Mwaura has said that the Mt Kenya region is very unlikely to produce a formidable candidate for the presidency in the 2022 general elections.
Currently, President Uhuru Kenyatta who is expected to retire in 2022 is considered the region's kingpin, and no other person from the region has come out to claim his position yet.
Mwaura argued that the region will most likely vote for Deputy President William Ruto who has declared interest in succeeding Uhuru or ODM leader Raila Odinga who has remained mum about his 2022 plans.
"Its true that we have had many presidents, hence the reason why some people have resolved that we should not have a candidate in 2022. The question is now either to support Ruto, Raila, or the camp where Raila will be (Ni kweli tumekuwa na marais wengi ndio maana watu wengi wanasema tusiwe na mgombea 2022. Sasa kuna swali; tuunge Ruto ama Raila ama ule muungano Raila atakuwa)," he said during an interview on Radio Maisha on Tuesday.
The vocal senator said that it will be very important for another part of the nation to produce a president so that the country can get a different or even better type of leadership than that which it has previously had.
The lawmaker further argued that the move will go a long way in correcting the misconception among some Kenyans that producing a president solves a community's problems.
"We want others to have it too so that they can realise that having a president doesn't put food on the table (Tunataka pia wengine wapate ndio waone kuwa na Rais haileti chakula mezani)," he stated.
Of the four presidents the nation has had, the Mt Kenya region has produced three, namely Jomo Kenyatta, Mwai Kibaki and Uhuru Kenyatta.
