The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Raila Odinga has weighed in on the vexed question of compensation for families who lost their loved ones in the aftermath of the 2017 presidential elections.
Speaking in an exclusive interview with NTV's Joseph Warungu, the former prime minister divulged that he had raised the issue with President Uhuru Kenyatta.
"Yes, that is one of the issues we discussed when we met the other time. I told President Kenyatta, "this thing has caused too much pain. Every time we go to elections people die, " Mr Odinga said. " the ODM leader said.
He went on to say that the issue of compensation would be taken care of in the Building Bridges Initiative (BBI) going forward.
"So I am saying the issues of compensation, these are some of the issues we have in the BBI. They are issues that we will raise and we will find a way of dealing with them, " Mr Odinga added. (2:18-2:35)
Scores of opposition supporters lost their lives during the tensions that came after the elections and there have been calls for Raila Odinga to push for the families of the victims to be compensated.
Proponents of compensation contend that thanks to the handshake with his long-time adversary President Uhuru Kenyatta, the former prime minister is in a stronger position to negotiate the terms of compensation.
Critics have held that he has done barely enough to push for the interests of the victims' families.
