According to Nation, Prof Odek, 56, collapsed and died at his Kisumu home on Monday morning.

He was scheduled to handle a number of cases.

Senate Minority Leader James Orengo in his message of condolence termed Odek as one of the best legal minds he's worked with in the Judiciary.

"Am still in deep shock and flustered by the debilitating news of the demise of Court of Appeal Judge Justice Prof. James Otieno Odek. Odek's death has robbed the Kenyan Judiciary of a great legal icon and an astute adjudicator who loved Kenya and had a passion for his job," Orengo said in a tweet.

"His towering status as an impeccable judge rather humbled him. I sincerely commiserate with the family and friends on this great loss and pray the Almighty God to grant him eternal rest in the bosom of the Lord. May God graciously fortify the family to bear this irreparable loss," he added.

Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo, a former Ombudsman and ODM Secretary General Edwin Sifuna also mourned the deceased judge.

They all described him as a towering figure in the Judiciary whose contributions will be forever cherished.

"Learnt With Much Consternation & Trepidation The Passing-On of My Colleague, Friend & Constituent Hon Justice Prof Otieno Odek! May His soul Rest In Peace," Otiende tweeted.

"My sincere condolences to the family and friends of the late Justice Prof. Otieno Odek, a brilliant mind taken from us too soon. May God comfort you during this very difficult time. Rest in peace Judge," added Sifuna.
