Nominated senator Isaac Mwaura has called on intersex Kenyans not to be afraid to come out.
Speaking on Monday during a stakeholders meeting with the Kenya Bureau of Statistics in Nairobi.
He said that being an intersex person is not as a disability, hence nothing to be shy about.
"Intersex people are born that way. This is the point. They don't change in the middle," the legislator said.
"I want to call upon those people who are out there, who are feeling very shy, who have lived for a very long time feeling like they do not belong that they should come out. This is your opportunity," he added.
Isaac Mwaura rattled off a list of the array of challenges that people born as intersex face as they lead their lives.
For the first time in the history of Kenya, intersex people will be counted in the upcoming census just days away.
Intersex people are individuals who cannot be identified as either male or female as they do not fit the typical definitions of the two genders.
The Kenyan society has been slow to accept intersex individuals due to the existence of conservative barriers that have made debate about their existence difficult.
