Speaking on Sunday in Kibra during his campaigns, Mariga said that he is aware of the issue of bhang, adding that he will fight for the lifting of the ban.

He, however, said that he does not want the residents to misuse the plant so that they can cause more problems at the end of the day.

He noted that bhang has medicinal value because it cures cancer.

"The issue of bhang. You want us to talk about bhang? We know bhang cures cancer is it true? That issue we must push. It is okay? We don't want bhang to fight people. We don't want to smoke bhang to fight people. Bhang is medicinal. I want you to vote for me so that we start fighting for this issue of bhang. It is high time we youth do not want to get Sh500 or Sh1000 we go and burn stalls for our mothers and other business persons. Na vijana sa hii ni high time hutaki tupate hiyo punch ama thao twende tuchome vibanda vya kina mama au watu)" he Mariga said in part of a video shared on YouTube.

The late Ken Okoth also wanted bhang legalised in the country.
