KANU party leadership has criticised a section of Rift Valley politicians demanding for a political repayment from the Mt Kenya region.

The party's Secretary General Nick Salat on Saturday called for political calm, urging those pushing for the 'debt payment' to cease pressuring the said debtor.

Speaking at a funeral service in Nakuru County, he said if there is a debt to be paid, then its upon the owed region to decide who should be receiving the payment on behalf of it.

"If you want to pay the debt don't pay it through someone. Let the community decide who should be paid. (Kama munataka kulipa deni apana lipa kupitia mtu, wacha jamii iseme deni italipwa kupitia nani)," he said.

This was in an apparent reference to the President Uhuru Kenyatta and Deputy President William Ruto deal of 2013, where Uhuru was to endorse Ruto for the presidency in 2022.

Salat is a close ally of Baringo Senator Gideon Moi, a sworn critic of the DP, and his possible rival in the much awaited 2022 polls.

Despite calls from his allies on Uhuru to reassure the DP of his pending 2022 support, Uhuru has remained silent on his 2022 plans.

Ruto too has made it clear that he won't be awaiting any automatic backing.
