Narok Senator Ledama ole Kina has rejected a proposal that is meant to grant governors immunity from criminal charges.
According to Senator ole Kina, the proposal undermines democracy and therefore he will not support it when it shall be presented in the Senate.
Nandi Senator Samson Cherargei has proposed a bill that seeks to protect governors by giving them immunity.
“There is need to change this country, Cherargei’s proposal will not get my vote,” ole Kina stated as quoted by The Standard.
The Narok senator claimed that the county bosses had become indiscipline and giving them such privilege would make them irresponsible.
“It will not be in order to do that, it is like telling them 'go ahead and loot',” noted the ODM legislator.
His nominated counterpart Isaac Mwaura agreed with the sentiments citing that corrupt governors should equally face the law.
“I do not agree and Senators cannot be the seen to be supporting corruption, let Governors face the law," Mwaura noted.
Senator Cherargei who also doubles up as the Senate's Legal Affairs and Human Rights Committee chairman wants governors to be only prosecuted when they are out of office.
He, however, says the bill does not support corruption as it was being purported.
“Just like the President and his deputy are protected from any form of prosecution while in office, governors should not be charged until when they are out of office,” Cherargei said.
