In a video shared on Twitter on Sunday, the outspoken legislator threw his weight behind the government's plan to evict people staying in the forest.

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) lawmaker said he would not allow anyone to come between the government and the efforts to conserve Mau.

"I want to support what the government is doing and also send a very very strong warning to anyone who will come in between the government and conservation," the senator said.

He said protecting the forest from human encroachment was all about protecting the interests of the future generations.

Ledama's trenchant words come amid a raging debate on the impending second phase evictions targeting Mau settlers.

A section of Rift Valley leaders last week voiced their opposition to any plan to evict people from the forest, saying that the land in contention does not belong to the national government but to the county government of Narok as trust land.

The leaders have called for dialogue with Environment Cabinet Secretary Keriako Tobiko, who maintains that the evictions will go on as planned.
