There was high-octane drama at the Fisht Stadium in Sochi as the hosts Russia took on the blazers of Croatia with both sides fancying their chances to progress to the semis.
The two sides battled it out bravely taking the game to penalties after scoring two goals apiece after extra-time.
Russia lost two of their penalties, giving Croatia the opportunity to advance which they took with both hands after Rakitic found the back of the net.
The Blazers will now face the Three Lions of England next Wednesday in what is expected to be an explosive fixture.
On the scoresheet for Russia were Dennis Cheryshev and Mario Fernandez who scored in the 31st minute and the 115 minute.
For Croatia were Andrej Kamaric and Domagoj Vida in the 39th and 100th minute.
It is the first time in over two decades that Croatia has been able to progress thus far.
